About Department

The Department of Guidance and Counselling is one of the ten departments in the Faculty of Education, Delta State University, Abraka. Educational Measurement and Evaluation Unit is resident in the department. Presently, the department runs Undergraduate and Postgraduate programmes. Specifically, the department runs Masters and Ph.D Programmes in Guidance and Counselling, Educational Psychology and Educational Measurement and Evaluation. At the Undergraduate level, the department runs a regular degree programme in Guidance and Counselling and has proposed same in Weekend, Continuing Education and Sandwich in the Intensive degree programme of the university which is bound to take off shortly. The department was established in the university as part of its contribution to produce manpower required to meet the demand for Guidance Counsellors in Schools as provided for in the 1981 National Policy on Education. However, due to development in humanistic and other fields of Psychology and the need to apply findings to solve human problems in virtually every aspect of human endeavours in various settings as the family, religion, business, education, industry, sports, recreation, work, health, relationships, hospitality, social and welfare services, the department has developed courses which have the capacity to equip students to function in school and non- school settings upon graduation. A follow-up on our graduates in the world of work reveals engagement, effectiveness and success of our products in nearly every aspects of human endeavours in school and non- school settings. The department boasts of some of the best cream of lecturing staff in Nigerian Universities in the field of Guidance and Counselling , Educational Measurement and Evaluation , Counselling Psychology and Educational Psychology with a strength of 15 academic staff comprising Professors, Associate Professors, Senior Lecturers and others.
